Hi Midge
Deep in the darkest reaches of my vault – alright my Dad’s shoe box kept under his bed – was this photo. My Dad’s been gone some 10 years so my share of the estate took a while to arrive on my doorstep! This is Topman graduation night at Leeuwin. My son the IT wizard tried to upgrade it for me and what looks like (at first glance) an inside shot is actually outside the mess. Look carefully and you’ll see everyone is smoking! You wouldn’t get away with that today. Mark Smale is in the background. (I always thought it was spelt Smaile but that could just be early Alzheimer’s caused by Alcoholism.) Alan Emery is in the right of centre with his girl friend who I recall was a good sort. He was very keen on her so that relationship may well have endured. The other girls appeared on the night (as they used to) and I never knew their names nor do I recall ever seeing them again (again as was common). I guess by now they’re properly married and respectable and boring like the rest of us! In fact the only thing I have in common with the bloke in the photo is that my hair is still far too long. Yes that isn’t a standard pussers haircut as you’d appreciate and I was forever in strife because of its length and style. I still have the hair but the ability to drink Captain Morgan for breakfast after an all night session at the ‘club has long since passed! The bloke on the far right I always thought was Holbrook but looking at your site in recent days I see he isn’t. He was in the Topman intake after us and often went to pubs/races/night clubs with us. I hope he picked up his game after we left because we weren’t good role models! Cheers Graeme Higgs
Thanks for the cc on this Higgsy. You blokes led a more interesting life than me as Topman.
The young fellow on the right is Wayne Haynes; he ended up serving in the Navy for around 30 years and retired as a four ring Captain last year. We did our PWO training in the UK and served as PWOs in ships around about the same time (1980s). He is now working for a large defence company.
You might be right about spelling of Mark Smaile's/Smale's name.
Phil getting ready to step ashore at the cross.. or he could have been Neptune's Missus I forget which

These two photos were taken in Hong Kong in 72 by two ex 34thers who for obvious reasons wish to remain anonymous. Turns out one of them thought it would be a good idea to kick a boulder down the hill... what you can see is not smoke it is water actually Hong Kongs water supply the second shot is one they shot over their shoulder as they did a runner.
